Becca Stackhouse-Morson Season 6 Episode 9

In today's podcast episode, we will discuss how to prevent our lives from spiraling out of control and maintain a balanced state. This concept was inspired by a speaker I encountered at a recent conference. She shared her journey and mentioned a phrase that resonated with me - about preventing a flame from turning into a fire. It sparked the idea for an insightful topic on how managing our challenges can lead to a more authentic self.

What keeps the ire from becoming the flames?

Introduction: In today's podcast episode, we will discuss how to prevent our lives from spiraling out of control and maintain a balanced state. This concept was inspired by a speaker I encountered at a recent conference. She shared her journey and mentioned a phrase that resonated with me - about preventing a flame from turning into a fire. It sparked the idea for an insightful topic on how managing our challenges can lead to a more authentic self.

Brief Summary of objectives:

  • Be able to identify who you along with what keeps your fire going from your day in and day out.
  • Be able to see your flames that might be on the verge of going out of control.
  • Being able to hon yourself exploration of who you are and the trajectory that life is headed for you with your self-relationship.

Are you happy with the maintenances of your fire and the flames that come out? This simple can be you happy with the current trajectory of your life and where it is headed? If you are not, then what are you going to do about it so life is not just busting into flames day to day and you are able to love YOU.

If you are at the places that you can see the need for changing a trajectory, you are not helpless and there are great things for you to do.

Topic 1: What is a fire?

Fires are one of these aspects that can create so much use, but at the same time so much damage. Fires have been used to cook, keep away predators, and a source of light. They have even been used as a communication tool and was so important in early societies, they learned to harness the power of a fire. This very much can complete to our lives of harnessing the power that we have throughout our day to day.

As time advanced societies learned how to use fire through steam engines, in powering factories, and ignite economic development and even in early lighthouses used a fire to share with ships the navigation of the dangerous waters and to safely dock at a harbor. I love the fact that lighthouse are still used today through different technology in guiding people to safety.

Often even today fireplaces are a desired element to the aesthetics of a household and create that warm cozy feeling of the crackling of the fire. Can you hear that fire crackling? There is something that causes us to relax when we are around the fire-pit making s'mores.

Think of yourself as the fire. Just like a fire needs tending to stay balanced and strong, you need to take care of yourself to stay balanced and resilient. Your actions and thoughts are like the flames, shaping your life and experiences. By nurturing your fire, you can navigate life's challenges and grow stronger.

Topic 2: What is a flame?

Let’s first start off by defining what a flame is this is a visible, gaseous part of a fire that is caused by a highly exothermic chemical reaction that is taking place in a thin zone outside of the fire. To be in the exact science of the flame it is a mix of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen, and nitrogen when it is just hot enough. Though the color and intensity of the flame can be different and vary greatly.

To simplify,  the flame is a vapor of simple undergoing a combustion

Flames are the outer source of our situations that we have been through they come from the fires in our life. They provide some wisdom, knowledge, and power as a symbolization of what you have grown through.

If your life is just on the verge or is in flames

A lot of days we choose things that are not in our best interest, because we are in a world where things are constantly attacking us. You have aspects from the world that are attacking you and that can hold you down. You have the choose to let this burst your flames and kick you down or bring yourself up and keep the flames at bay while the fire is still going strong.

This might just simply come from yourself and not being your own worst enemy. You are needing to create the self-discipline within yourself to be able to face the flames that the world is trying to through in your fire and throwing you off.

Topic 3: How do we keep our flames at bay and within the comforting fire?

You must have self-love for yourself that means it brings behaviors of self-love toward yourself. This can simply start with the negative talk that you have with yourself and the conversations of beating yourself up. I can tell you that being your own worst critique can help to accomplish goals to perfection, but this can lead to beating yourself up and only listening to the negative. This can be a terrible place to find yourself and hard to see the positive. Start speaking positive words to yourself in every daily interaction and then move toward the positives of who you want to see yourself become.

Stop… this means stop focusing on the bad situations in life and begin to focus on the positives. I have to say this one can be hard beyond hard. But you have way more happening around you then only the negative happening in life. This is because no matter our circumstances, we can always find a positive aspect in our circumstances.

Do yourself a favor and spend time seeing what is right about you no matter what you or others are saying. Do yourself a favor and write down on your mirror the things you are doing right!

The reality is you are going to be investing your energy into something, so you might as well invest in the life and strength in life and not on the life taking aspects of life.

I know that one of my strengths is to be honest on speaking the truth, but more boldy presenting oneself in a genuine way and acting in a sincere way and being able to take responsibility for one’s feelings and action. This helps me in being able to self-regulate in the moment and has taken years of understanding myself to be able to be honest with myself. I would challenge you to find tools to help identify your strengths, but also look at what weaknesses that you have so you are able to identify that as well. When you can approach both sides, you get a clearer picture that you’ll be able to understand who you are and what is happening.

What you can do in keeping the flames at bay is to really work on the self-exploration which will help you make sense of who you are throughout. Getting to know yourself is often a difficult space to be in. You might miss out here because of a lack of motivation to sit with your self or to access the thoughts and feeling of finding this insight with yourself.  This can just simple be the process of getting to know your own mind and thoughts, no matter the spaces you are in currently.

  • There are vast benefits to this process of self-exploration and this can be from the improvement of your awareness for thoughts, beliefs, values, and behaviors.
  • This gives you a better understanding of your inner landscape.
  • An awareness for personal growth through confronting limitations, fears, and even unresolved issues.
  • The ability to have enhanced decision making
  • Gives you the ability to be more of your authentic self.

Topic 4: Self Exploration:

Mindfulness gives you the power to process through cultivating a non-evaluative, nonjudgemental awareness within yourself. You are able to simply observe your thoughts and understand YOU.

Intuition of honing to tune into who you are and the inner wisdom and innate “knowing” that helps in your decision-making and in your behavior.

Engaging in introspection of how we feel and boost our predictive power for behaviors. You can help look at this in a short time every couple of days through journaling.

Visualization of a future situation and uncovering the ways that are implicit and explicit motives behind our behaviors. Looking at how you feel, think and behave to see how you need to work on the now for the then.

Recap: This recap is to be able to have self-awareness to evaluate the flames coming out of your fire in life that you do not like. It is having the ability to see that your life isn’t headed in the trajectory that fuels a healthy self-conversation and pausing to evaluate and working on it to have better self-conversations to find the positive in the day to day even when circumstances are tough.
