Navigating Personal Loss on the Journey of Self-Discovery
Each of us embarks on a unique journey of loss throughout our lives. I would like to share my personal experiences of loss, which emerged as I began to build my business. This journey has been instrumental in helping me uncover my authentic self. I'll discuss my encounters with loss, including the passing of my grandparent, miscarriage, financial setbacks, friendship changes, and a career transition.
The Taboo of Miscarriage
Miscarriage is a topic often shrouded in taboo, yet it holds significant importance in our society. This is one of those subjects that frequently goes unspoken, leaving many to mourn in silence. Our culture often lacks the language and space to discuss miscarriages and stillbirths, even though miscarriages are a common occurrence, affecting around 10-20% of pregnancies (Mayo Clinic, 2023). It's a topic that tends to be acknowledged only after someone has experienced it, as if to say, “Welcome to the miscarriage club”—a phrase that underscores the isolation and pain of this journey. It’s certainly not a club anyone wishes to join.
A study conducted in 2015 found that nearly 20% of individuals who experienced a miscarriage developed depression or anxiety, with symptoms lasting anywhere from one to three years. Feelings of guilt, irritability, or numbness often accompany these experiences. Unfortunately, we are not educated on how to navigate these emotions. Approximately 15 to 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage before the 12-week mark, a process that is largely beyond our control—it's simply a part of the genetic cycle. Yet, we often find ourselves blaming ourselves, believing we could have acted differently. Following a loss, not only do you grapple with the emotional toll, but your hormones are also plunged into a tumultuous roller coaster ride.
Today, I invite you to explore your true self by navigating the experience of loss. In recent years, I have truly discovered who I am by embracing discomfort and journeying through the challenges that arise. I am here to support you on your own path with a variety of online resources, personalized coaching sessions, and weekly insights delivered directly to your inbox.
